Is that really a question?
Remember Kindergarten? If you grew up like me, it was all about learning your ABCs, counting to ten, and, well, recess! And Pre-K? That felt like a mix of finger painting and snack time (oh, and potty training, of course). But guess what? Times have changed in a BIG way.
What's the Deal with High Expectations?
Nowadays, public schools across the U.S. have cranked up the academic pressure. Back in the early 2000s, Kindergarten was where you started learning your letters. Now? Kids are expected to stroll into Kindergarten already knowing them—and not just the basics. These higher expectations aren’t all bad, but they do come with their own set of challenges.
Higher Standards: The Good and The “Uh-oh”
Let’s start with the good stuff! Raising the bar for our youngest learners could mean that future generations will be better educated and more prepared for the world. I mean, who wouldn’t want that?
But here’s the catch: as academic expectations rise, so do the diagnoses of developmental delays in children. And let’s not forget about the impact the pandemic had on learning—it didn’t exactly give our kids the strongest foundation for building crucial academic skills.
But Don’t Stress: Your Child IS Ready
Here’s the important part: If your child is school-aged, they are ready—no matter where they are developmentally. While standards may be tougher, schools are better equipped than ever to support students with different needs. Thanks to laws like IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education), every child has the right to a proper education, disability or no disability.
If your child needs a little extra help, they might qualify for an IEP (Individualized Education Plan), which is like having a personalized roadmap to success. Of course, the process to an IEP will vary by county and state. But don’t forget—your child's teacher is your ally! Teachers are an amazing resource when it comes to understanding how your child is progressing and what support is available.
